People may have heard of the MRE, known as meal ready to eat, but what they may not have known is that there is a special MRE that Muslims eat, known as the Halal MRE. As the name suggests, the food has been prepared to the high standards expected from Muslims.
One of the biggest consumers of these foods are the army. The reason for this is that the meals come ready to eat in the box. They can be eaten hot or cold, with no need to actually heat the food up. This means that this type of food is ideal for a combat situation, where grabbing food on the go is essential. However, it’s not only soldiers that can consume the food.
In emergency situations, such as wars and natural disasters, these products have been responsible for saving countless lives. People love the fact that you can get all your daily nutrition from them without the need for water, electricity or gas. Hiker and campers often pack them for this exact reason, because they never know when an emergency will arise.
What people should remember is that just because a Muslim can eat this type of food it does not mean that people of other religious faiths can eat it too. Jews, for instance, have special requirements for grains like rye, barley and wheat, especially during the Passover. Also, they have different culinary standards to Muslims.
The ready to eat meal can actually be eaten hot. And it can even be heated up without the use of a stove or any type of electrical equipment. What soldiers, hiker and campers have found is that if you leave the packet out in the sun for half an hour the food gets sufficiently warm to be considered a hot meal. Alternatively, you can placed the foil packet on a running vehicle engine for ten minutes and the food will be ready to consume.
What people need to remember is that kosher food and halal food, whilst similar in some regards, are quite different in others. Therefore, it would not be a good idea to give a Muslim a kosher MRE or give a Jew an MRE meant for a Muslim. They prepare food to different standards and eat different types. For instance, some Jewish food is made with alcohol, something that is strictly forbidden in the Islamic faith.
The great thing about the meals, other than their ability to be eaten without the need for any source of power, is that they come in a ready to eat form. They also contain the right balance of nutrition and calories to last a soldier the entire day. Everything a person wants from a meal is contained within the box. Most boxes contain a number of different courses, such as a snack, drink, main meal, dessert and a side dish.
The Halal MRE, although not eaten by many people, is an important product for armies. Their versatility and ease of transportation make them the ideal choice for most people. They last up to a year and each package has an expiry date.
